NEW
Also known as: LayerNorm
A normalization technique that normalizes activations across features for each sample independently, stabilizing and accelerating training regardless of batch size.
DESCRIPTION
Layer Normalization normalizes the summed inputs to neurons within a layer for each example, using per-feature mean and variance and learnable scale and bias. Unlike BatchNorm, it does not depend on batch statistics, making it effective for RNNs and Transformers and for small batch sizes. It improves gradient flow and convergence and is commonly used with residual connections. Variants like Pre-LN and Post-LN affect stability and depth scaling. RMSNorm removes the mean and scales by root mean square.
ALTERNATIVE DEFINITIONS
arXiv
We present Layer Normalization, a novel method that normalizes the activations of the neurons in a layer for each training case, instead of across the batch.
Contrasts per-sample normalization against batch-based approaches.
PyTorch
Applies Layer Normalization over a mini-batch of inputs as described in the paper Layer Normalization.
Implementation-focused description tied to the original paper.
TensorFlow
Layer normalization normalizes the activations of the previous layer for each given example in a batch independently.
Highlights per-example independence from batch statistics.

TOP QUESTIONS
Why is Layer Normalization widely used in Transformers?
It stabilizes training independent of batch size and sequence length. Pre-LN architectures especially improve gradient flow and depth scalability.
Category: Relevancy
How does Layer Normalization differ from Batch Normalization?
LayerNorm normalizes per example across features; BatchNorm normalizes across the batch per feature. LayerNorm avoids dependence on batch statistics.
Category: Differences
When should I prefer RMSNorm over Layer Normalization?
RMSNorm can be slightly faster and stable by normalizing via RMS without mean subtraction. Empirically, both often perform similarly; validate on your task.
Category: Opinion
What are common mistakes using Layer Normalization?
Placing normalization after nonlinearity unexpectedly, or mixing Pre-LN/Post-LN without retuning learning rate can destabilize training.
Category: Mistakes
Does Layer Normalization hurt inference latency?
It adds modest overhead. Fused kernels and hardware acceleration minimize impact; for extreme latency constraints, consider normalization-free variants.
Category: Performance
Where should Layer Normalization be placed in a Transformer block?
Pre-LN before each sub-layer is common for stability; Post-LN can work but may require careful warmup and tuning.
Category: BestPractices
How does Layer Normalization affect gradient flow?
It reduces internal covariate shift and stabilizes signal magnitudes, aiding gradients to propagate in very deep networks.
Category: Concept
Can Layer Normalization replace Batch Normalization in CNNs?
It can, but BatchNorm may perform better for large-batch CNN training. Validate empirically on your dataset and hardware.
Category: Opinion
What hyperparameters are involved in Layer Normalization?
The learnable scale (gamma) and bias (beta). Some variants include epsilon for numerical stability.
