NEW
Also known as: GroupNorm
A normalization method that divides channels into groups and normalizes within each group, effective for small batch sizes.
DESCRIPTION
Group Normalization (GN) normalizes activations by grouping channels and computing per-group statistics, independent of batch size. It addresses the instability of Batch Normalization when batches are small or irregular. GN is particularly effective in detection, segmentation, and video tasks where large images or memory constraints force micro-batches. Compared to Layer and Instance Normalization, GN trades off invariance and capacity control via the group count hyperparameter. It integrates seamlessly with convolutional architectures and residual blocks.
ALTERNATIVE DEFINITIONS
Wu & He
We propose Group Normalization (GN) for training deep neural networks. GN divides the channels into groups and computes within each group the mean and variance for normalization.
Original proposal emphasizing per-group statistics and batch-size independence.

TOP QUESTIONS
Why use Group Normalization instead of Batch Normalization?
Group Normalization is stable with small batch sizes because it does not rely on batch statistics, improving performance in memory-constrained settings.
Category: Relevancy
How many groups should I choose for Group Normalization?
A common default is 32 groups, but it should divide the channel count and can be tuned for accuracy and efficiency.
Category: Guidance
Does Group Normalization work for fully connected layers?
It is mainly used in convolutional layers; for fully connected layers, Layer Normalization is often preferred.
Category: BestPractice
How does Group Normalization compare to Layer Normalization?
Layer Normalization normalizes across all channels per instance, while Group Normalization normalizes per group, offering a middle ground between layer and instance normalization.
Category: Comparison
What is the computational overhead of Group Normalization?
Overhead is modest and similar to other normalization layers; performance depends on implementation and group count.
Category: Performance
Is Group Normalization beneficial for object detection models?
Yes, it is particularly effective in detection and segmentation tasks where small batches are common due to large input sizes.
Category: Application
Can Group Normalization and Batch Normalization be mixed?
Yes, some architectures mix them, but consistent normalization across layers simplifies optimization and tuning.
Category: Practice
How does Group Normalization affect gradient flow?
It stabilizes activations and gradients similarly to other normalization methods, aiding training convergence.
Category: Theory
Does Group Normalization require running statistics at inference?
No, it uses per-instance group statistics, simplifying training-inference behavior compared to Batch Normalization.
