NEW
Also known as: FFN
A network where connections do not form cycles and information flows forward through layers.
DESCRIPTION
Feed-forward networks compute outputs by passing inputs through sequential layers without feedback loops. Multilayer perceptrons are classic FFNs with dense layers and nonlinear activations. They are trained using backpropagation and gradient descent. FFNs underpin many deep architectures, including components inside transformers and CNN classifiers. Their simplicity makes them effective for tabular data and function approximation. Regularization, normalization, and careful initialization improve generalization and training stability.

TOP QUESTIONS
What is a Feed-Forward Network?
It’s a neural network where information flows from inputs to outputs through layers without cycles, commonly trained with backpropagation.
Category: Overview
How does an FFN differ from an RNN?
FFNs lack temporal connections and cycles, while RNNs incorporate feedback to model sequences and time dependencies.
Category: Alternatives
Where are FFNs effective?
They perform well on tabular data, classification, regression, and as building blocks in larger architectures like transformers.
Category: Example
What is a common training challenge for FFNs?
Vanishing or exploding gradients; use proper initialization, normalization, and activation functions to mitigate.
Category: Mistakes
Do FFNs overfit easily?
They can; regularization techniques like dropout, weight decay, and early stopping help improve generalization.
Category: Risk
How do FFNs appear in transformers?
Each transformer block includes a position-wise feed-forward sublayer applied to token representations.
Category: Example
What is the biggest misunderstanding about FFNs?
That they are obsolete; FFNs remain core components in modern deep architectures and many practical tasks.
Category: Misunderstanding
What is required to implement an FFN?
Define layer sizes, activations, loss function, and use gradient-based optimization with careful initialization and normalization.
Category: Requirements
How to evaluate FFN performance?
Use train/validation splits, relevant metrics, learning curves, and monitor overfitting with regularization and early stopping.
