NEW
Also known as: Single neuron
A linear binary classifier and learning algorithm that updates weights based on misclassifications.
DESCRIPTION
The perceptron is a foundational neural model for supervised learning of linearly separable classes. It computes a weighted sum of inputs and applies a threshold activation. The perceptron learning rule iteratively updates weights to reduce misclassification. While single-layer perceptrons can only solve linearly separable problems, multilayer networks with nonlinear activations overcome this limitation. Perceptrons inspired early neural network research and remain pedagogical and baseline tools.
ALTERNATIVE DEFINITIONS

TOP QUESTIONS
What problems can a Perceptron solve?
Linearly separable binary classification problems; it fails on nonlinearly separable tasks like XOR.
Category: Definition
How does the Perceptron learning rule work?
It updates weights by adding the input scaled by the error for misclassified examples.
Category: Concept
Is the Perceptron still relevant?
Yes, as a conceptual foundation and simple baseline for linear separability.
Category: Relevancy
How does Perceptron compare to Logistic Regression?
Both are linear classifiers; perceptron uses hard threshold and marginless updates, logistic regression uses probabilistic outputs and convex optimization.
Category: Comparison
What is a typical mistake using Perceptron?
Applying it to nonlinearly separable data without feature engineering or kernels.
Category: Mistakes
How can I extend a Perceptron’s capacity?
Use feature transformations, kernels, or multilayer networks with nonlinear activations.
Category: Application
Does the Perceptron always converge?
It converges if the data are linearly separable; otherwise, it may not.
Category: Risks
What loss does a Perceptron implicitly optimize?
The perceptron criterion, not a convex loss; updates occur only on mistakes.
Category: Concept
Where is Perceptron used today?
Educational contexts, fast baselines, and as a building block in historical context of neural networks.
