Also known as: Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient
An off-policy actor-critic algorithm using a deterministic policy for continuous action spaces with target networks and replay buffers.
DESCRIPTION
Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG) extends deterministic policy gradients to deep networks for continuous control. It employs an actor to select actions and a critic to evaluate them, using replay buffers and target networks for stability. Exploration typically relies on noise processes (e.g., Ornstein–Uhlenbeck) added to actions. DDPG can be sample efficient but is sensitive to hyperparameters and can be unstable. It is often compared with SAC and PPO for performance and robustness.

TOP QUESTIONS
When should I use DDPG?
Use DDPG for continuous action spaces with off-policy learning where deterministic control may suffice.
Category: Requirements
How does DDPG handle exploration?
Action noise, such as Ornstein–Uhlenbeck, is added to deterministic policies during training.
Category: Topic
What are common mistakes with DDPG?
Insufficient target network smoothing, poor reward scaling, and unstable critic training can derail learning.
Category: Mistakes
How does DDPG compare to SAC?
SAC’s stochastic policies and entropy term usually improve robustness; DDPG can be brittle without careful tuning.
Category: Alternatives
What roles do actor and critic play in DDPG?
The actor outputs actions; the critic evaluates Q-values, guiding gradient updates for the actor.
Category: Example
What’s the biggest misunderstanding about DDPG?
That noise ensures exploration quality; in practice, reward shaping and normalization matter greatly.

How do you productionize DDPG?
Use experiment tracking, evaluation against baselines, safety constraints, and robust model selection.
Category: Management
What risks come with DDPG?
High sensitivity to hyperparameters and stochastic training can produce unstable policies.

What benchmarks feature DDPG?
MuJoCo tasks and robotics simulations often benchmark DDPG performance against SAC and PPO.
