Also known as: ToT
A reasoning approach that explores multiple branching solution paths and selects the best outcome.
DESCRIPTION
Tree of Thoughts generalizes chain-of-thought by representing intermediate reasoning states as nodes in a search tree. Models generate multiple thoughts per step, evaluate them, and branch promising paths. This enables exploration of diverse strategies for complex problem solving. Scoring can be done by the model or external heuristics. It is effective for tasks requiring deliberation, planning, or combinatorial search.
ALTERNATIVE DEFINITIONS
Yao et al.
We introduce Tree of Thoughts (ToT), which generalizes chain-of-thought reasoning to enable deliberate reasoning over a space of thoughts.
Defines ToT as a generalization of CoT enabling exploration over reasoning space.
Princeton NLP

TOP QUESTIONS
What is Tree of Thoughts?
It’s a method that branches and evaluates multiple reasoning paths, selecting the best solution trajectory.
Category: Definition
How does Tree of Thoughts differ from Chain-of-Thought?
CoT is linear reasoning; ToT explores a branching search of intermediate thoughts with evaluation.
Category: Difference
When should ToT be used?
Use it for complex, combinatorial, or planning tasks where exploring alternatives improves outcomes.
Category: Application
How are thought branches evaluated in ToT?
Scoring can be model-based, heuristic, or external; top branches are expanded iteratively.
Category: Mechanism
What are the costs of ToT?
Increased tokens and compute due to branching and evaluation; careful pruning is essential.
Category: Risks
Can ToT be combined with self-consistency?
Yes. Aggregate results across branches to improve robustness.
Category: Example
Is ToT suitable for real-time applications?
Often no, without pruning—branching increases latency. Consider constrained search or alternatives.
Category: Requirements
What tools support ToT?
Research repos, custom orchestration, and evaluation frameworks; some libraries offer ToT-style prompts.
Category: Resources
What’s a competing approach to ToT?
Graph of Thoughts generalizes beyond tree structures; Chain-of-Thought remains a simpler baseline.
