NEW
Also known as: Activation Sparsity
A design where only a subset of neurons or experts activate per input, reducing computation while preserving model capacity.
DESCRIPTION
Sparse activation activates only selected components (neurons or experts) based on input-dependent gating. Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) architectures realize high capacity with controlled compute via top-k expert routing. Sparse activations also arise naturally with ReLU and thresholding. Benefits include reduced FLOPs and potential improvements in specialization and scalability. Challenges include routing stability, load balancing, and implementation efficiency. Sparse activation underpins scalable, efficient transformer variants.

TOP QUESTIONS
Why use Sparse Activation in large models?
It reduces compute per token while retaining high model capacity, enabling scalable training and inference.
Category: Relevancy
How does Sparse Activation work in MoE transformers?
A gating network selects a small subset of experts per token, which process the input while others stay inactive.
Category: Example
What are risks of Sparse Activation?
Poor load balancing, expert collapse, and routing instability can degrade quality and hardware utilization.
Category: Risks
How to evaluate Sparse Activation effectiveness?
Measure accuracy, throughput, and cost versus dense baselines; monitor expert load distribution and routing entropy.
Category: Validation
What’s a common mistake with Sparse Activation?
Neglecting balancing losses or capacity constraints, leading to overloaded experts and bottlenecks.
Category: Mistakes
Is Sparse Activation beneficial for inference?
Yes, if kernels and hardware support conditional execution efficiently; otherwise, theoretical gains may not materialize.
Category: Opinion
Does Sparse Activation help generalization?
Specialization among experts can improve generalization, but results depend on routing quality and training dynamics.
Category: Opinion
How does Sparse Activation relate to ReLU sparsity?
ReLU creates unstructured activation sparsity; MoE induces structured sparsity through explicit routing to experts.

What’s a hot topic in Sparse Activation research?
Efficient routing, expert parallelism, and memory-communication trade-offs on multi-node hardware.
