NEW
An adaptive gradient optimization algorithm that normalizes updates by a moving average of squared gradients.
DESCRIPTION
RMSprop adapts learning rates per parameter using an exponentially decaying average of squared gradients. It mitigates Adagrad’s aggressively diminishing learning rates, improving convergence in nonstationary settings. Commonly used in training deep neural networks, it requires tuning of learning rate and decay parameters. RMSprop inspired Adam, which combines RMSprop with momentum-like bias correction. Implementations are widely available in Keras and PyTorch.

TOP QUESTIONS
When should I use RMSprop over Adam?
RMSprop can perform well in some recurrent networks and nonstationary problems. Adam often works out-of-the-box, but RMSprop may be simpler to tune.
Category: Opinion
What hyperparameters matter most for RMSprop?
Learning rate and decay factor (rho) are critical. Epsilon also affects numerical stability.
Category: Requirements
How does RMSprop differ from Adagrad?
RMSprop uses an exponentially decaying average of squared gradients, preventing Adagrad’s rapidly shrinking learning rates.
Category: Concept
Is RMSprop suitable for sparse gradients?
It can work, but Adagrad or Adam often handle sparsity better in practice.
Category: Opinion
What is a common mistake when using RMSprop?
Reusing default learning rates from other optimizers can slow convergence. Always tune for your task.
Category: Mistakes
Does RMSprop need momentum?
Some implementations include momentum, which can improve convergence on certain problems.
Category: Advanced
How does RMSprop interact with batch size?
Smaller batches introduce more noise; RMSprop’s adaptive scaling can help stabilize updates.
Category: BestPractice
Is RMSprop deterministic?
No, unless seeds and determinism flags are set and hardware nondeterminism is controlled.
Category: Risks
What metrics indicate RMSprop is working well?
Steady training loss decrease, stable gradient norms, and improved validation performance indicate healthy optimization.
