NEW
Also known as: Region-based Convolutional Neural Networks
A region-based object detection approach that extracts CNN features on region proposals and classifies them to detect objects.
DESCRIPTION
R-CNN introduced region-based detection by generating region proposals (e.g., via Selective Search), extracting CNN features, and classifying them with SVMs. It significantly improved accuracy over traditional detectors but was slow due to per-region CNN computation. Successors Fast R-CNN and Faster R-CNN improved speed by sharing convolutional features and learning proposals. R-CNN remains a seminal step toward modern detection pipelines and a teaching reference.
ALTERNATIVE DEFINITIONS

TOP QUESTIONS
What was R-CNN’s key innovation?
Combining region proposals with CNN features to dramatically improve detection accuracy over hand-crafted features.
Category: History
Why is R-CNN slow?
It runs a CNN forward pass for each proposed region independently, leading to large computational overhead.
Category: Performance
How did Fast R-CNN improve upon R-CNN?
By sharing convolutional feature maps across proposals and performing ROI pooling, reducing redundant computations.
Category: Distinction
When should I use R-CNN today?
Mostly for educational purposes; modern two-stage or one-stage detectors are preferred in practice.
Category: Relevancy
What are common pitfalls when reproducing R-CNN?
Inconsistent proposal generation and feature extraction can lead to poor results; strict preprocessing is crucial.
Category: Mistakes
How does R-CNN compare to YOLO?
YOLO is single-stage and much faster with end-to-end training, while R-CNN is more modular but slower.
Category: Alternatives
Which datasets established R-CNN performance?
Pascal VOC benchmarks were early standards demonstrating R-CNN’s significant gains.
Category: Evaluation
What concept from R-CNN persists today?
Region-based processing with shared features underpins modern two-stage detectors.
Category: Concept
What is the biggest misunderstanding about R-CNN?
That it’s a single model; it’s a method combining proposals, CNN feature extraction, and separate classifiers.
