NEW
Also known as: QKV
Three vector sets used in attention to compute relevance weights and produce context-weighted representations.
DESCRIPTION
In attention mechanisms, queries represent what to attend to, keys characterize available information, and values carry content to aggregate. Scaled dot-product attention computes weights via query-key similarity and applies them to values. Transformers use multi-head attention to capture diverse relationships. QKV dimensions and projections are central to model capacity and performance.
ALTERNATIVE DEFINITIONS
Vaswani et al. (2017)
Given a query and a set of key-value pairs, the attention function outputs a weighted sum of the values, where the weight assigned to each value is computed by a compatibility function of the query with the corresponding key.
Foundational definition of attention with Q, K, V formalism.
PyTorch Docs
Applies multihead attention over the input. The output is computed by attending the query to the key-value pairs.
Implementation-oriented articulation connecting query to key-value pairs.
TensorFlow
Scaled dot-product attention uses the query, key and value to calculate attention weights and create an output as a weighted sum of the values.
Highlights scaled dot-product computation and weighted sum.

TOP QUESTIONS
What do Query, Key, and Value represent in attention?
Queries ask what to attend to; keys describe items; values hold the content aggregated into the output.
Category: Concept
Why is scaling used in dot-product attention with QKV?
Scaling by the square root of key dimension stabilizes gradients and prevents extreme softmax values.
Category: Requirements
How does multi-head attention use QKV?
It projects QKV into multiple subspaces, computing attention per head to capture different relationships.
Category: Capability
What are common mistakes configuring QKV dimensions?
Mismatch between head sizes and model dimension causes shape errors and poor performance.
Category: Mistakes
What is the role of QKV in cross-attention?
Queries come from the decoder input; keys and values are from the encoder, enabling conditional generation.
Category: Application
How do QKV projections affect model capacity?
Projection matrices define representational power and compute cost; more heads and larger dimensions increase capacity.
Category: Performance
Is additive attention a competitor to QKV dot-product attention?
Yes, it uses a different scoring function; dot-product is more efficient on modern hardware.
Category: Comparison
How can I debug QKV shapes in implementation?
Log tensor shapes, use assertions, and unit tests around projection and reshape steps to ensure correctness.
Category: HowTo
What’s a hot topic around QKV and attention?
Efficient attention variants (flash attention, sparse attention) optimize QKV computation for long sequences.
