NEW
A method learning node representations via biased random walks.
DESCRIPTION
node2vec learns continuous vector embeddings for nodes by simulating biased random walks that capture both community (homophily) and structural (role-based) relationships. Using a skip-gram objective, it optimizes embeddings to preserve network neighborhoods. Hyperparameters p and q control walk bias toward breadth-first or depth-first exploration. The embeddings support downstream tasks like node classification, link prediction, and clustering. node2vec is widely adopted due to its scalability and simplicity. It builds on ideas from word2vec by treating walks as sentences. Implementations are available in SNAP, NetworkX, and PyTorch Geometric.

TOP QUESTIONS
What is node2vec and how does it work?
node2vec learns node embeddings by simulating biased random walks and training a skip-gram model. It captures both community and structural similarity through tunable walk parameters.
Category: Definition
Why are node2vec embeddings useful?
They encode graph neighborhoods into vectors, enabling effective node classification, link prediction, and clustering with standard machine learning models.
Category: Relevancy
How do p and q parameters affect node2vec?
p and q bias walk exploration: one favors breadth-first exploration, the other depth-first. Adjusting them balances local homophily and global structural roles.
Category: Example
What are common mistakes when applying node2vec?
Using too short walks or small windows underfits structure; insufficient negatives or poor sampling leads to noisy embeddings.
Category: Mistakes
What risks exist with node2vec embeddings?
Embeddings may encode bias in graph data and can be hard to interpret. Overfitting occurs if hyperparameters are tuned on test tasks.
Category: Risks
How does node2vec compare to DeepWalk?
node2vec generalizes DeepWalk by introducing biased walks to capture both homophily and structural equivalence, often improving downstream performance.
Category: Alternatives
How to evaluate node2vec embeddings?
Use downstream tasks like node classification with fixed embeddings or link prediction AUC. Intrinsic tests include analogies or clustering coherence.
Category: Testing
How to scale node2vec to large graphs?
Parallelize walk generation, use efficient alias sampling, and optimize I/O. Consider approximate nearest neighbors for downstream tasks.
Category: HowTo
What datasets are common for node2vec experiments?
Citation networks (Cora, Citeseer), social graphs, and protein interaction networks are widely used benchmarks.
