NEW
A family modeling sums of exponential variables.
DESCRIPTION
The Gamma distribution is a two-parameter family used to model positive, continuous quantities such as waiting times and rates. It generalizes the Exponential distribution; integer shape yields the Erlang distribution. In Bayesian analysis, Gamma is conjugate to Poisson and Exponential rate parameters. Its flexibility in shape and scale makes it useful in reliability and queueing. The Chi-squared distribution is a special case of Gamma.

TOP QUESTIONS
How is the Gamma Distribution parameterized?
Common parameterizations use shape k (or α) and scale θ, or shape α and rate β = 1/θ. Support is x ≥ 0.
Category: Explanation
What is the relationship to the Exponential Distribution?
The Exponential is a special case with shape k = 1. Sums of independent Exponentials are Gamma distributed.
Category: Explanation
Where is the Gamma Distribution applied?
Reliability modeling, rainfall amounts, queueing times, and as a Bayesian prior for rates (Poisson/Exponential).
Category: Example
What distributions compete with Gamma for positive data?
Weibull and Lognormal often fit varying hazard shapes or multiplicative effects. Choose based on residuals and theoretical assumptions.
Category: Alternatives
How to estimate Gamma parameters?
Use maximum likelihood or method-of-moments. Numerical optimization is typical; closed forms exist for some estimates.
Category: How-To
What is Erlang and how does it relate?
Erlang is Gamma with integer shape parameter. It models the sum of a fixed number of Exponential stages.
Category: Explanation
What’s a common modeling mistake with Gamma?
Ignoring zero-inflation or rounding in data; Gamma supports strictly positive values and may need zero-augmented models.
Category: Mistakes
How does Gamma connect to Chi-squared?
Chi-squared with ν degrees of freedom is a special Gamma with shape ν/2 and scale 2.
Category: Explanation
Is Gamma heavy-tailed?
No, it is light-tailed, though skewness can be high for small shape. Tail behavior decays exponentially.
